National Allotment Week - A plot for all ages.
Its National Allotment Week from 10th -16th August 2015, the theme this year is to emphasise the benefits that allotments bring to everyone regardless of age or gender. Sadly, allotments are constantly under threat from developers so the fact we need to value our remaining plots and preserve them for future generations to enjoy is another key message of the week.
We have listed below just some of the benefits these special plots of land have to offer:-
- By just being on your allotment you are out in the open air and getting some exercise which is great for both body and mind!
- You can then enjoy your own grown food and be safe in the knowledge that nothing else has been added.
- Allotments are also a great way to involve the young and old, so making a great activity for all the family. This can be extended across the whole community with allotment projects taking place all over the country.
- Allotments provide habitats for wildlife, so even in inner cities these patches of green provide essential support for hundreds of species.
The National Allotment Society is asking allotment owners to hold a `Party on the Plot’ during the week to highlight the above points and also to gain support from local communities by showing people why allotments should be kept.
Ideas for ‘Party on the Plot’ include old fashioned tea parties, vegetable auctions and allotment themed quizzes which will be taking place all over the country as part of allotments week . Find out more about the National Allotment Society.
